MAJOR EVENTS.

   1)  Cornelius Gracchus and Gaius Gracchus were two brothers trying to get some of the Italian land given back to the poor people. The rich in the Senate didn't want to give the land back, so in 133 and 123 BC, the Senators themselves, with a lot of followers, rushed up to Gaius and Cornelius and killed them on two different occasions. Although, the Senators commited murder, but they nothing happened to them.

    2) The Africans who have been attacking Carthage were still causing trouble.

Romans traders who were living in Africa were killed. So about, 100 BC, the Romans went to Africa to fight again. Also , it was hard to get enough soldiers, and the general, Marius, ended taking poor jobless men from Rome then telling them they would be rewarded if they won. At the end, Rome won.

    3) Italians felt that Rome wasn't treating them well enough and they wanted to be able to vote more. So, in the 80's BC, there was a war with the Italian cities, under a general named Sulia. The war was called the Social War. The name was from the Latin word for allies, "socii".  The war took a long amount of time, but again the Romans won.

Marius and Sulla got into a fight over who should be the gneral to fight in Western Asia. Sulla lost but he took his army and marched on Rome, and threatened to have his army attack Rome unless the Senate gave him the job. It worked, so Sulla went to Western Asia, and when he got back he made himself a dictator.

After Marius and Sullus died, it was certainly clear that Roman Senate was no longer powerful enough to run the Roman Empire. Everyone started looking for who would be the next powerful general. Three men joined forces to get power: Pompey who was a friend of Sulla's, Crassus who was a very rich man, and Julius Caesar who was a friend of Marius'.

These men ran the government for ten  years, while Julius Caesar conquered Gaul, but then Crassus was killed fighting the Parthians in West Asia, and Pompey and Julius Caesur got in a civil war. Alot of men died on both sides, but finally Julius Caesar won the battle. Pompey fled to Egypt, but the Egyptians killed him so Caesar wouldn't be mad at them.
